TLS, one page, 6.5 x 8.5, White House letterhead, April 4, 1968. Letter to famous actor Edward G. Robinson. In full: “I am proud to have your continued confidence. My decision was difficult, but I have the faith to believe that it will prove wise and healing in helping to unite Americans and so advance the day of peace. There is no higher or more urgent interest. I ask your hand in this vital purpose, with all gratitude and hope.” Handsomely matted and framed with a photo of President Johnson and Martin Luther King, Jr., to an overall size of 17 x 22.5. In fine condition. This letter, written on the day that King was assassinated, concerns President Johnson’s shocking announcement that he would not seek another term in office in the 1968 election. He announced these intentions on March 31, making this likely one of the first letters he sent discussing the matter. Fascinating content from a turning point in American history.
