Signed book: A President’s Country: A Guide to the Hill Country of Texas, edited by Jack Maguire. First edition. Austin, Texas: The Alcalde Press, 1964. Hardcover with dustjacket, 5.25 x 8.75, 80 pages. Signed and inscribed in black ink (all by LBJ) on the title page, “To Paul Betz with our very best wishes, Lady Bird and Lyndon B. Johnson. Nov. 26, 1964.” In fine condition, with some light staining and toning to the dustjacket, heaviest along the spine.

Betz was a 20-year-old pre-medical student who courted the younger ‘first daughter,’ Luci Baines Johnson, when she was only 17. Early in their relationship, Betz escorted Luci to her father’s inaugural ball. Despite earning the “very best wishes” of President Johnson’s, the young relationship eventually ended, and two years later Luci married Patrick John Nugent. A one-of-a-kind item signed just a few weeks after a successful presidential campaign.
