TLS as president, one page, 6.75 x 9, White House letterhead, June 8, 1965. Letter of thanks to U Thant, Secretary General of the United Nations, on the occasion of the Gemini 4 flight. In full: “I deeply appreciate your thoughtful message on the successful flight of the Gemini-4 space capsule. This accomplishment is another significant stride in our efforts to better mankind through the peaceful exploration of space. Thank you for your communication on this historic occasion.” In very good condition, with uniform mild toning over most of the letter from previous display, staple holes to top left corner, and old tape toning to each corner, which could be matted out. Accompanied by photocopies of related White House file memos regarding the crafting of a standard response to congratulatory letters of the mission, as well as copies of U Thant’s cable of congratulations.

Gemini 4 continued America’s exploration of space and march toward the moon, with this mission featuring the historic first space walk by an American. Astronaut Ed White’s success was “another significant stride in our efforts to better mankind through the peaceful exploration of space,” Johnson here assures the UN’s secretary general. A ‘standard’ but nonetheless appreciative reply to a space race achievement, with excellent association between two great men.
