Army General (1899–1988). Lemnitzer played an integral role in negotiating the Italian fascist surrender during the secret Operation Sunrise and the German surrender in 1945. Two TLSs signed “L. L. Lemnitzer,” one page each, 7 x 8.5, personal letterhead. In the letter dated August 28, 1976, the general writes to Major Charles Piver, in part: “I thoroughly anjoyed [sic] my visit to The Air University and lecturing to your Class of 1976 at The Command and Staff College and at The Air War College”; and in the letter dated May 25, 1978, Lemnitzer writes, in part: “I can see considerably similarity between world tensions now and those prior to World War II. The most striking similarity is that one of the world powers (USSR) today is implementing an aggressive expansionist policy and, at the same time, is rapidly building up its military strength far beyond the requirements solely for defense. Another similarity is that the United Nations is as ineffective today in dealing with the world problems it was designed to solve as was the League of Nations during the period between World War I and World War II.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds to the second letter, passing through a single letter of the signature.
