Businessman (1841–1905) who, along with his brother Joseph, founded Bloomingdales Department Store. TLS, one page, 7.25 x 9.5, personal letterhead, January 6, 1897. Letter to Edmund Hendricks. In full: “I am in receipt of your favor of January 5th inquiring as to Mr. J. M. Tobias, with regard to his application to join Lafayette Post, and in answer beg to say, that I have known Mr. Tobias for a number of years, and am glad to say that I can speak only well of him. I believe that he will be an acceptable member of the Post, and therefore recommend him.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, a couple passing through single letters of signature, scattered light toning and soiling, and a bit of light spreading to signature. Edmund Hendricks (1834-1909), a veteran of the 7th Regiment, New York Volunteers, in the Civil War, was a member of Hendricks Brothers, a family copper business. Lafayette Post, No. 40, Grand Army of the Republic, was organized in New York City in 1880. Hendricks was a member of the Membership Committee of Lafayette Post.
