Lydia, Persian Imperial Coinage. Circa 450-330 B.C.<p> AR siglos. Bearded archer right in kneeling-running attitude, holding spear and bow/Oblong incuse. 5.51 g. Babelon plate 86, 13. EF45 ICG. The relationship of silver to gold at this time was close to 13:1, as one unit of gold would be worth 13 units of silver. As I write this, the ratio in 2002 is about 65:1! The ancient rate was reduced still further, until 10:1 was established at the time of the Philip II-Alexander III gold and silver issues minted in great quantity. The relationship of bronze coinage was different, as it was not a precious metal, and had a greater fiduciary than intrinsic value. From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M. Seventko.
