Lydia, Persian Imperial Coinage. Circa 450-330 B.C.<p> AV daric. Bearded archer right in kneeling-running attitude, holding spear and bow/Oblong incuse. 7.88 g. Head (The Coinage of Lydia and Persia) plate I, 15, Grose (Catalogue of the McClean Collection of Greek Coins) 9680. EF45 ICG. We know from hoard evidence that, while gold darics and silver sigloi were issued by the Persian kings, they nevertheless were trade coins circulating in western Anatolia. The darics and sigloi were quite a bit like our own gold issues for Saudi Arabia, minted at the Philadelphia mint in the mid-1940s, for oil payment, in denominations of the gold sovereign (pound) and four sovereigns.
