This is a hand carved solid wood statue from the Lulua Tribal people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Lulua, also known as the Bena Lulua settled in the southern part of DRC after migrating there fromwestern African during the 18th century. Lulua sculpture is elegant and graceful, with complex scarification on the neck, abdomen, face and limbs, which recalls old Lulua customs, now long gone due to scarificationuse being banned in 1888. This scultpure shows a mother breast feeding her two children. This has a few repaired areas, but shows excellent carvings and is a very rare piece. The piece is believed to haveconsiderable age being from the 19th to 20th century. Measures 35.25" tall and 8.5"x7"
