This intense image depicts a soldier grabbing a baby out it's mothers arms. Lucien Jonas was an illustrator for the French army in WWI. This illustration is a charcoal and pencil drawing framed in an art nouveau style wood frame with a top mat of gunmetal gray. It is a fabulous framing package that fits the image perfectly. The work was attained at a Frank Boo's Gallery (Troy, MI) auction and is in great condition. Total size is 20" x 18" inches. Lucien Jonas was one of the more prolific Great War illustrators. A gifted and talented artist, he was mobilized in December of 1914 and in February of 1915 was officially accredited as 'military painter secunded to the Musée de l'Armée' in Paris. During the war he traveled extensively along all sections of the front lines and produced thousands of drawings, oil paintings, charcoals, sketches and illustrations of all kinds. His work was reproduced in the media of course and published in a multitude of magazines and books worldwide. All of his most striking works were originally published in 'l'Illustration'. A number of his illustrations were printed in color in 'Les Annales' as centerfolds and two page spreads. He was also greatly appreciated as portraitist of military leaders.
