Title is Saint. 7" by 9 1/4". Red Chalk on Paper. Luca Giordano (1632/34 - 1705) was active/lived in Italy. Luca Giordano is known for Baroque painting, ceilings, altarpieces. Luca Giordano was born in Naples, Italy in 1632 or 1634. He was the son and pupil of the painter Antonio Giordano, whom he is said to have outdistanced as a painter at the age of eight. He later studied under Ribera. For some time he was in the service of the painter Pietro da Cortona, whose style and methods he assimilated almost to the extent of mimicry. He had, as a matter of fact, a particular talent for imitating almost any painter's technique, and for a time he earned his living making copies of the masters. In 1665 Giordano became a Master in the painters' guild. In 1692 he became court painter to Charles II of Spain and within the period of two years completed an immense fresco for the ceiling of the church and the staircase of the Escorial. He was probably one of the most prolific painters of all time. He was called "Luca the Speedy" as much in admiration as contempt. According to estimates his oil paintings totaled five thousand.. He died in Naples in 1705.
