McLachlan-127, Betts-430, Breton-38, Eimer-680. 39mm. 28.8g. Plain edge. Unsigned (by Lewis Pingo). One of several medals sponsored by the Society Promoting Arts and Commerce that commemorated British victories during Seven Years’ War. These exist in both silver and copper, and both variants are rare. The reverse is a play on the Roman Judea Capta motif, as adopted for the North American colonies, showing a female figure representing New France, weeping, seated right against a tree with a beaver climbing up the bank behind. This is a Gem example with vibrant fire-orange colour around the devices that appears as vibrant as the day the medal was struck. The exposed areas are slightly subdued with rose-violet and blue iridescence. Eye appeal is extraordinary. The finest we have seen.
Ex: James King; John Sallay; Sallay Collection (Stack’s Bowers, 11/2016, as MS64RB PCGS), lot 35; John Kraljevich via Jacob Lipson (8/2018).
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
