McLachlan-179, Breton-108. 44mm. 40.8g. Plain edge. Signed J. MOORE. The High School of Quebec was established in 1804. Henry Fry, a successful merchant in the local lumber and shipping trade, served as a trustee of the school between 1866 and 1877 and established this prize for English literature. The obverse features the arms of Quebec with a female figure seated right holding a cornucopia, a beehive left and a beaver right, with the citadel and a sailing ship in the background. J. Moore, the engraver responsible for the British and Canadian School medal, created this design as well, which McLachlan described in 1886 as “chaste and highly creditable to the artist.” The surfaces exhibit blended copper and reddish-brown colour with flashy fields. Beautifully preserved without marks or rim imperfections.
