Lovely noteworthy antique polish hero etching, 1820. a very special piece, this is a French etching on steel, a striking portrait of Tadeusz Kosciuszko, 1746-1817, polish army officer and statesman who gained fame both for his role in the United State. war of independence and for his leadership of a national insurrection in his homeland. the minuscule print above the title, requiring magnification, reads > oleszczynski, born in krasnystaw, poland in 1796, was an engraver and editor known for a remarkable collection entitled " varietes polonaise " featuring the most notable figures in polish history, magnificently rendered based on his painstaking historical research. under the patronage of tsar Alexander, oleszczinsky was sent tp saint petersburg to study engraving. after winning several prestigious awards there, he was sent to Paris, where his portrait of kosciuszko was awarded a prize which was instrumental in his induction into the philotechnic society of Paris.
