Provenance:Gifted to James Sheehy, Director of the Revenue Stamping Branch, from the artist, 1972; Thence by descent

Printed in Dublin in 1969 by Frank O'Reilly in an edition of seventy plus one artist's proof, these lithographic brush drawings illustrate the epic Ulster cycle of heroic tales. The complete set of this seminal series comprises three portfolios, of which this is the second in the series. Presented in its original black clamshell case with title pages, preliminaries and black interleaves. A rare and highly desirable set.
James Sheehy was director of the Revenue Stamping Branch, Dublin Castle and was responsible for most of the security printing of the State during the 1960s and 1970s, including the production of postage stamps. Louis le Brocquy designed several stamps during that time and relied on Jim Sheehy’s expert advice as to matching his designs to the printing processes involved to the best effect.
