Painted during le Brocquy’s so-called traveller or tinker period of 1945-48, and
in the same year as the record-making Travelling Woman with Newspaper, Annamoe
River is a deceptively simple work which reveals many of the artist’s working
methods of the time. The multi-facetted composition, struck through repeatedly
with strong black diagonals, harks back to his work during the war years
designing stained glass windows for Dublin public houses, whilst also referring
to early twentieth century cubist experiments in surface manipulation. The muted
colours, however, look forward to the severely limited palette of the ‘Grey
period’ paintings which were to dominate le Brocquy’s oeuvre during the 1950s.
