Louis XVII Era Rosewood Veneer Wig Box Late 18th C
Featured in this lot is this beautifully crafted, late 18th Century Louis XVII-XVIII period, rosewood veneer & inlay wig box. It shows a rosewood veneer construction with a beautiful star burst inlay pattern on the top of the lid and a rectangular form with stepped and beveled edges reflecting the Louis XV style. It is fitted with a brass keyhole and hinges. The interior is constructed from solid hardwood, possibly walnut or oak, commonly used as a secondary wood in high-quality French boxes of the time. Wig boxes like this were used by aristocrats and high-ranking individuals during the 18th century to store and protect their wigs, which were essential fashion accessories of the period. The box comes with a letter from Les Remparts Antiquites, giving a small explanation of the style and its use. It shows good condition overall with wear and patina from its age and use over the years, but no signs of obvious damage is noted. It measures 8 7/8" L x 11 1/2" W x 4 5/8" H and weighs 2 pounds.
