Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler skylig
Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler skylight from the Chicago Stock Exchange USA, 1894 glass, wood, lead 35.5 w x 16.75 h inches The Chicago Stock Exchange represents the pinnacle moment in the architecture of Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan. The technical skill of Adler coupled with the artistic vision of Sullivan produced buildings that made real the edict "form follows function." This individual skylight was originally part of a large arrangement installed directly above the trading floor. These windows created a ceiling that naturally filtered the changing daylight and diffused a subtle spectrum of colors. When the trading room was reinstalled at the Art Institute, only about 75% of the original stained glass was used. The remaining glass and stencil work was salvaged from the demolition of the building or lost. Very few examples of this design exist outside of the collection of the Art Institute installation. The stained glass windows for the Chicago Stock Exchange were executed by George Louis Healy and Louis Julian Millet.
