Pioneering French microbiologist and chemist (1822–1895) who demonstrated the germ theory of disease and developed the first vaccine against rabies. Original vintage 7.5 x 5.5 cabinet photo by Dornac & Cie of Paris, showing Pasteur sitting in a parlor chair next to a fireplace, signed and inscribed in black ink in French “A Ms. Cissier, souvenir des 27.X.1892, L. Pasteur.” Some scattered light spotting and surface marks to image, and light creasing to corner tips, otherwise fine condition.

Pasteur celebrated his 70th birthday two months after signing this image, a birth date that was proclaimed a national holiday in France. The elderly scientist, however had been weakened by a series of strokes by that time and was unable to speak to a delegation assembled at the Sorbonne in his honor. Although photos signed by Pasteur are rare, the fact that this image was signed and dated as he was in failing health and approaching the end of his life makes this specific example all the more desirable.
