ALS in French, signed “L. Pasteur,” one page, 5.25 x 8.25, May 20, 1882. Letter written from Paris and addressed to "Monsieur Dentu," bookseller-editor at the Galerie d’Orleans in the Palais Royal, in part (translated): "Yesterday, someone brought me, in my absence, two volumes titled Pantheon de la Legion d’Honneur [Pantheon of the Legion of Honor], edited by your publishing company. I am holding these two volumes for you; I am not accepting them. If the author T. Lamathiere is the individual who left them at my house, as I don’t have his address, I am asking you to please give him the notice of my refusal which is not the first time, and he knows this well. I have never subscribed to/ordered his work...Please accept, Sir, the expression of my highest consideration." Pasteur adds: "Enclosed (please find) a stamp in case you will be obliged to write to Monsieur Lamathiere." In fine condition. In 1882, the same year of his acceptance into the Académie Française and his awarding of the Albert Medal from the Royal Society of Arts, Pasteur began to focus his efforts on the problem of rabies, his last great endeavor as a scientist.
