Gifted pianist and composer (1829–1869) who was one of the first figures in American music to attain an international reputation. His colorful keyboard works, often inspired by the Creole music he heard in his Louisiana childhood, pioneered the use of ethnic source materials in American ‘classical’ music. ALS signed “L. M. Gottschalk,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, August 5, 1888. Letter, in his difficult to decipher hand, to his music publisher asking for help with a pianist. In part: “Mr. Bowen, a…pianist to the son of the first music publisher of this island, being desirous of playing my composition, I beg you to send him one copy of all the pieces of music you have published. It would be to your advantage that your publications should be known in this part of the world.” Letter is affixed by its second page to a slightly larger off-white sheet. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, toning under signature from adhesive on reverse, scattered toning and foxing, some stray ink marks, and a small hole to top edge of first page.
