Goldsborough, Rear Admiral, USN,” one page, lightly-lined both sides, 7.75 x 10, May 25, 1864. Letter, marked “Private,” to Army and Navy Journal editor William Conant Church requesting he be allowed to write an anonymous reply to an anonymous article attacking his famous report on iron clad ships he had written to the secretary of war. In part: “I beg leave to send you, herewith, for publication, a reply to your correspondent…whose article against my report to the Secty of the Navy on the subject of Iron-clads, appeared in your paper…As he wrote over a nom de plume, I beg to be permitted to observe the same course.” In very good condition, with scattered creasing and toning, several small tears to body of text, light show-through from writing on reverse, and a few small notations.
