Nephew (1813–1891) of Napoleon Bonaparte who distinguished himself as a philologist of authority on most European languages, particularly Basque. LS signed “L. L. Bonaparte,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 3.5 x 5.5, September 18, 1819. Response to a gentleman. In part: “Concerning your small volume. It is written in the dialect of the Upper-Enghadine, which is but a mere variety of the Lower-Enghadinese dialect. I can only conjecture that Tschlin may be the same as Cellerina which is the Italian name.” Affixed to a slightly larger sheet. In fine condition.
