Journalist, political mentor, and adviser to Franklin D. Roosevelt who later managed his successful gubernatorial and presidential campaigns. TLS signed “Louis McH. Howe,” one page, 6 x 5.75, White House letterhead, January 4, 1934. Brief but intriguing letter to Myles Lasker. In full: “Answering your note of the twenty-eight, as you know, I am keeping out of the code situation as far as I possibly can.” In very good condition, with light toning, wrinkles, and scattered soiling. The “code situation” to which Howe refers concerns the National Recovery Administration’s agreement with major industries to accept government-backed codes designed to stop the downward slid of payrolls, prices, and production.
