Union officer who was severely wounded at the Battle of Cedar Mountain and went on to serve at the adjutant general’s office in Washington. He was the first to dispatch guards to Ford’s Theatre after Lincoln’s assassination and assisted in taking witness statements. Civil war-dated partly-printed DS, filled out by Pelouze and signed “Louis H. Pelouze, Asst. Adj. Genl,” one cardstock page, 5.5 x 3, July 29, 1864. Army pass, in full: “Pass Major Franklin Ames and Edward A. Holmes to and from Alexandria, VA. Pass expires Aug 3rd 1864.” In very good condition, with heavy toning and soiling.
