<Our item number 140065><B>Freycinet, Louis Claude Desaulses de.</B> &#40;1779 - 1842&#41; French maritime officer and Pacific explorer. Assigned to Baudin&#39;s exploring expedition to Australia in 1800, he edited the reports and maps of the expedition in 1805. In 1817, he commanded the ships &#34;Uranie&#34; and &#34;Physicienne&#34; on a scientic exploration into Australian waters, visiting the Mariannas, Hawaii, and other Pacific Islands. His ship was wrecked off the Faulkland Islands &#40;in Antarctic Waters&#41; but the records of the expedition were saved. On his return, Freycinet again set to editing the scientific findings, as &#34;Voyage Autour du Monde&#34; which was issued in 13 volumes over the years 1824-44. Autograph letter signed &#40;&#34;L. De Freycinet&#34;&#41;, 1p, 8 x 6 in., in French, 3 Oct. 1828. To Mr. Bouvard of the Royal Academy of Science in Paris, saying that he had redone the calculations which Mr. Bouvard had questioned and that temperature corrections were applied so that the d iscrepancies noted could not be attributed to that.
