<B>Louis Brandeis Inscribed Association Copy of Lancelot Addison's<I> Present State of Jews</B></I></B></I> <I>Wherein is Contained an Exact Account of Their Customs, Secular and Religious to Which is Annexed a Summary Discourse of the Misna, Talmud, and Gemara.</B></I> (London: William Crook, 1682), third edition, pages A1-A3 Epistle Dedicatory to The Right Honourable Sir Joseph Williamson followed by a seven page insert by the printer being a disclaimer and advertising other books available, 248 pages plus 4 pages of contents at back, full leather with modern rebacking, four spine compartments between three raised bands, gilt titles, 24mo (3.25” x 5.5”), boards scuffed, pages slightly toned, endpapers replaced, worn at the corners, slight water stain to a small area at the top right corner of several pages (not detractive), bookworm hole from page 181 to the end, else good in a beautiful custom tan cloth and leather full clamshell case. Louis Brandeis (1856-1941), the first Jewish member of the Supreme Court, has inscribed the book to his close friend and leader of the modern Zionist movement, Jacob de Haas. The inscription written in ink on the front free endpaper reads in full: “<I>To Jacob de Haas, Zionist. Who with active faith and courage and long years of service has done much to make better the future state of the Jews this little book is sent with high appreciation. Louis D. Brandeis May 20/25.</B></I>” There is also a name of a previous owner written in the book “<I>Tho Foxcroft 1723</B></I>”.
