Intriguing collection of handwritten passages in French covering a variety of subjects, 19 pages, approximately 6 x 4, no date. Bougainville pens a number of literary excerpts on magnetism, classical authors such as Plutarch and Tacitus, early scientists including Isaac Newton and Galileo Galilei, and various other scientific themes. Several pages are penned on the reverse of a chopped-up French mercantile marine license. In overall fine condition. A French admiral and explorer, Bougainville (1729–1811) first took part in the French and Indian War and later became famous for his expeditions, which included the first recorded settlement on the Falkland Islands and his voyages into the Pacific Ocean. In 1766 he received permission from Louis XV to circumnavigate the globe, and he became the first Frenchman to do so after successfully completing the journey. A fine collection demonstrating Bougainville’s intellect and interest in many areas.
