Eminent and versatile Swiss-born American zoologist and geologist (1807–1873) who carried out much of his research as a longtime faculty member at Harvard, where he was also instrumental in building the university’s enviable natural history collection. Relaxed 4.25 x 6.5 full-length cabinet portrait by Antoine Sonrel, depicting Agassiz seated and reading a book, signed in ink in the lower border, “L. Agassiz, 1868.” Tiny tack holes to each corner and faint silvering to the image, otherwise condition is fine. A superb example. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection.
