Pencil signature, “Lou Gehrig,” at the foot of a TLS signed “Willie Ritchie, Jr.,” 7.25 x 10.5, Athletic Club of San Francisco, September 6, 1932. The letter reads, in part: “Will you kindly honor me with your signature to add to my collection of autographs of famous sporting men? I assure you I will be very happy if you will grant me this priviledge [sic] and enclosed please find a return addressed stamped envelope….” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, tear to bottom edge (fabric tape to reverse lightly showing through; a narrow strip of similar tape to the top edge of the reverse), and mild wrinkling and handling wear. The signature is clear, clean, and completely free of any faults, and itself rates as fine. The writer of the letter was evidently the son of Hall of Fame boxer Willie Ritchie (1891–1975), who held the world lightweight title from 1912 to 1914. The elder Ritchie is listed on the letterhead as “physical director.” About three weeks after receiving this autograph request, Gehrig and the Bronx Bombers were headed to the World Series, where they handily defeated the Chicago Cubs in four games.
