The American League Base Ball Club of New York, Inc., payroll check, 9 x 3.25, filled out in type and signed by Jacob Ruppert as president, payable to Louis Gehrig for $707.52, June 15, 1927. Endorsed neatly on the reverse in fountain pen by Lou Gehrig, and vertically countersigned on the front by Ed Barrow as secretary. In fine condition. Anchoring the heart of the notorious 1927 New York Yankees 'Murderer's Row' lineup as the cleanup hitter behind Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig started off the season at a sweltering pace—by the time he received this payroll check, he had already tallied 14 home runs and 60 RBI, and was batting .391. He finished with a record-breaking 173 RBI, was named the American League's MVP, and led the Yankees to a then-league record 110 wins and a four-game sweep of the Pirates in the World Series. The 1927 Yankees are considered by many to be the greatest team in baseball history, and this payroll check for their iconic cleanup man—signed by three Hall of Famers—is a magnificent relic from the legendary season. Encapsulated and graded by PSA/DNA as NM-MT 8, and accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA.
