Le Tricorne was a ballet developed by Diaghilev and Massine after travelling through Spain, and the work demonstrates a translation of Spanish dance into the formal ballet style, based on episodes from the 19th century novel by Pedro de Alarcon (1833-91), El Sombrero de Tres Picos. Pablo Picasso designed the sets and costumes for the first production by Diaghileff's Company, Alhambra Theatre, London 22nd July 1919, starring Karsavina and Massine. The story is set in a Southern Spanish village at the end of the 18th century, featuring an unpopular Govenor of a province, who decided to seduce the pretty wife of a millar. He persues her, but after various escapades, the story ends with his downfall, allowing the villagers to celebrate the end of the rule of the 'three cornered hat'.
