Lot of two historic original Texas arrest warrants, both with El Paso County Court seal imprints, both approx. 7” x 8”, both in very good to excellent condition and each enclosed in a protective acid free clear sleeve. The first warrant is for Ed Vecque for “Exhibiting a gaming table and bank for the purpose of gaming on or about June 8, 1895” and signed on the reverse side by famous El Paso County Sheriff F.B. Simmons and Deputy W.J. TenEyck indicating Vecque was arrested on June 29, 1895 at which time he was placed on bond. The second warrant was issued for Phil Baker for “Exhibiting a gaming table and bank for the purpose of gaming on or about May 1st, 1895” and also signed by Simmons and TenEyck indicating Baker was arrested and placed under bond on June 29, 1895. It is likely, given the dates of the arrests, that they were associated with one of the periodic attempts to control El Paso’s gaming in their saloons although the County coffers depended heavily on the fees they regularly received from the many saloons and gambling joints that existed in this tough border town during the 1890’s. Est.: $500-$750.
