Lot of Two (2) Large Bowie Knives
a) Massive and impressive knife with one piece round stag antler handle. Iron pommel cap, ferrule, and crossguard all beautifully and delicately inlaid with silver scroll and vine motif. Attributed to Mexico or Southwestern America. Stippled design on blade. Knife is 17” overall with a 11 3/4” clip point blade. Tip slightly chipped, grind marks at the ricasso, slight surface pitting. Comes with what appears to be the original well worn red leather over wood sheath; b) Classic clip point Bowie with nicely grained and yellowed 2 piece ivory grips fastened with 6 brass pins and containing a German silver escutcheon, 14” overall in length with slightly blunted tip. The 9 1/4” blade is well worn, heavily sharpened and shows major grind marks. The ricasso shows a illegible mark ending in OT. The note originally attached to the blade stated this was an Elliot, Sheffield and found in the Gallatin River, this is unsubstantiated. Elliot was in Cork, Ireland, around the 1850s and 60s. The ivory is cracked and has 2 chips. The crossguard is loose and shows grind marks.
