Lot of Seuss Letters & Sketch
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Amazing lot of letters by the master storyteller Dr. Seuss, including ten autograph letters signed, three typed letters signed and an original drawing of one his characters exclaiming, ''Boo!'' Letters are written to Seuss' former editor throughout the 1970's, and are full of content not only regarding Dr. Seuss' life, writings and the publishing business, but also literary critiques and advice to his former employee. They are chock full of Dr. Seussisms, and clever turns of phrase. In one letter dated 4 March 1972 Seuss writes, ''...Some idiot printed my birth date in a syndicated column, and 8,372,000 1/2 kids sent me letters, drawings and presents. With the help of Joan...who's a very sound and pleasant worker...I hope to get them all answered before March 1973. Busy now re-writing the Perkins and Berenstein books for September. Also finishing a Seuss Bright & Early, entitled: Marvin K. Mooney / Will you PLEASE GO NOW! [published later that year] Response from the Lorax has been very very cheerful. T.V. Rating very high. And if the CBS Network doesn't run out of $$ (all three networks are scared stiff, moneywise) will be starting the Three Decker through production next month...I enclose a spring flower from our garden just to remind you of California...(I am however enclosing no smog.) Love, Ted.'' In another letter Seuss writes, ''...Glad you got the job! Yes, they called me and I said you were the greatest editor in the world since Horace Greeeley...'' In a funny letter dated 29 July, Seuss writes, ''...I've already set up sort of 2 shop and am working on the 50 states, 2nd Chuck ones is pursuing me and will show up on Tuesday, and now I'm going swimming to prepare my body temperature for the Rodeo tomorrow...'' A letter written the following week (July No. 2), Seuss analyzes a story, ''...see if it can be made more exciting, step by step. (From page 22 on, it goes forward and backwards simultaneously.) They're pulling a goat toward a boat, as if this action had some meaning. Then in the next picture, goat is dropped and boy is helping mother put on coat which will be a very dull picture, Then we have active scene of music making, and dull scene of walking hand in hand. Then we go to three very dull concepts...drawing, writing and praying. (If drawing and writing are used, it should happen way back in book. Praying, in my opinion, should not be used at all)...after we have the boy and the monk standing on their hands, they should start walking on their hands. This might enable us to start some forward motion into new scenery...'' Letter has much more content regarding the manuscript he was critiquing. In a letter dated 19 September 1980 Seuss writes, ''...I have, for months, been working on a sort of autobiography for Random House, and the letters are involved...'' And in one undated letter written when Seuss was traveling, he writes, ''...Hawaii, Japan & Hong Kong were great. Although I've had about 2 dozen interviews and two television appearances, we've had lots of time for fun and friendly people...Beginner Books are doing astonishingly well in Japanese in Japan and in English in Hong Kong and Singapore. And David Hayes and I have started a project to get them into Chinese translation...I must close now because some lizzards came in out of the rain under my door. Love Ted.'' A wonderful archive of letters showing the range of Dr. Seuss as caring friend, businessman and disciplined writer. Many letters written upon his official Cat in the Hat stationery. Lot also includes copy of ''Horton Hatches the Egg'' in Japanese. In near fine condition.
