Description: Up for auction we have this hand made Native American Apache basket. The basket is made of sumac or willow grass. Jicarilla Apache basketry covers a long span of time, but very little is known of their work before they were settled on a reservation in 1887 in northern New Mexico. All Jicarilla baskets are of coil weave, usually of sumac, but sometimes of willow. Hampers were definitely a concession to the non-Indian buyers. The decoration on the exposed surfaces of Jicarilla baskets traditionally fades to a soft palette from the original strong palette of the commercial dyes used. Mostly, baskets of this age have faded so badly that the original decoration cannot be discerned. The condition of this one is very good and the pattern is quite discernible. The name Jicarilla is said to be from the Spanish word for “little basket.” Jicarilla is the Spanish diminutive (little) for the word jicara, which, according to linguistic scholars, is a Hispanicization of the Mexican Nahua word xicalli. The xicalli, or jicara, was the gourd-like fruit of the Central Mexican jicaro tree. The term was also used for the round, wide-mouth drinking cups that were made from this fruit, and eventually the word became synonymous with any kind of drinking vessel, especially those used by Mexican Indians for chocolate. This basket definitely resembles a drinking cup. It measures about 2.75" tall and the top rim diameter is 2.75" as well. The basket is in good condition as pictured. The other item featured in this lot is a Hopi Indian pot made out of clay. Please note that it does have two cracks as pictured. The pot is entirely hand made and decorated. The pot measures about 4.5" tall and has a top rim diameter of 3.75".
