an unrelated group of 4 officers and 7 enlisted men including 6 signed cartes, all with Maine imprints. The identified officers are Capt. John S. Hay, AQM, formerly 9th ME (m/o 7/6/65), and Chaplain J.E.M. Wright, 8th ME in civilian frock (resigned 8/14/65). A third staff grade officer with Brunswick, ME backmark wears shoulder straps with oak leaves denoting major/lt. colonel. Only two officers from Brunswick achieved this rank, Brevet Brigadier General Stephen H. Manning and Brevet Major/Lt. Colonel Edward W. Thompson. As this is not Manning, it may de facto be Thompson. A fourth bearded company grade officer is anonymous. Of the enlisted men, two appear to be wearing the sky blue uniform of the VRC. One carte is nicely tinted, showing full leather equipment including holstered pistol, and signed in pencil, Thomas Combs/Augusta Me. The brass insignia on his kepi reads, 1B over C for 1st Battalion, Company C. Just one Thomas Combs is listed as wounded; he is Thomas D. Combs, formerly 44th NY and Company A., 140th NY (WIA Peebles’ Farm 9/30/64, transferred out 10/11/64). The other VRC man in lightly tinted sky blue coat is signed Chas. Bean in period pencil. HDS shows 59 so-named soldiers on Union rosters, 16 from Maine. Another carte is pencil-signed Charles L. DeVilleneuve/Augusta Me./USA. HDS shows this man as a US Army Hospital Steward, no further details. The last signed carte is J.S. Leavitt/Saco/Maine/USA. This is probably Pvt. John S. Leavitt, Company B., 1st Battalion US Engineers, no additional information known. Three more privates are completely unidentified.

Condition: CDVs at least G. with several showing edge/corner wear with two trimmed. Chaplain Wright heavily water stained.
