Fascinating lot of 8 candid photographs of Jackie Kennedy selecting the new furnishings for the White House as part of the White House Restoration project. The First Lady updated the executive mansion in 1961 with furniture from past presidencies as well as period furnishings from important eras. The project focused on the State Dining Room, the East Room, Green Room, Red Room and Blue Room. Lot totals 10 photos of the restoration, 8 of which show Jacqueline Kennedy actively consulting with an expert and hand-selecting various pieces of decor. The remaining 2 are from the same shoot and show the woman with whom Jackie was collaborating. True to form, the First Lady, renowned for her good taste and style, conducts business in a smart tailored dress and single-strand beaded necklace. Photos measure 6.75'' x 9.75'', save for one (not featuring Jackie), which measures 8'' x 7.75''. Minor creasing to some photos, pencil notations to verso of 2 photos and abrasion to the top edge of one photo, else lot is near fine overall. Provenance from the papers of Sally Powers, who served as secretary to White House curator Lorraine Pearce.
