Lot of 5 Civil War Era Letters
Lot of 5 Civil War Era Letters With Excellent Content. Five letters, three to four pages in length, written by Paul J. Cornell of Newbern, Portsmouth, and Washington, North Carolina, with dates from March 2, 1863 through June 26, 1864, four of the five to his cousin, all with the usual fold creases, else in near fine condition. From reading the letters it appears that Cornell was a merchant (at one point indicating that he was in the baking business). It is also apparent that he was not an ardent supporter of the South’s cause. It one particularly passionate letter he writes, in part: “You say the Rebelion sic can be stoped sic any day that the Reble sic States will lay down thare sic arms & submit to the laws, that is so but how can the people do it. The ones that raised the Rebelion sic are the ones that are in office, thay sic make what laws that suit thare sic cause and the ones that do the fighting ought to rule, has to obay sic , the question will naturally sic arise, why thay sic donot sic lay down thare sic arms and say thay sic will not fight. Probley sic it would be so, if thay sic were allowed to express their sentiments freely, but that is not so for each one is afraid to trust his best friend for fear he may prove falce sic information against him, and he thareby sic loos sic his life for Mutiney sic . So you see that cannot be until sic the leaders are taken & hung as they ought to be.” Another letter references the evacuation and burning of Washington, North Carolina. Ex. Henry E.
