Lot of 22 Editions Circa 1684 of The Observator, A London Newspaper. Each issue two pages, 7.5” x 12”, editions date from 1684 to 1685, several examples appear to have been disbound from a book, toned, especially at the edges, else in near fine condition. The Observator was published from April 13, 1681 until 1686 or possibly 1687. It was published under the auspices of Roger L'Estrange, an English pamphleteer and author, and staunch defender of royalist claims. In 1644 he led a conspiracy in support of King Charles I and was sentenced to death as a spy, but after serving four years' imprisonment he was able to escape to the Continent. Given L'Estrange's inflammatory nature, these papers will surely provide hours of seditious reading. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
