One Cent
PCGS Certified 1793 Flowing Hair “Chain” Cent

1793 Flowing Hair “Chain” Cent, Periods, PCGS graded Fine-12.
Sheldon 4. Sharpness of VF-20, but with some shallow pits on both sides. All of the salient details are present, including a strong chain and date. Not only was the “Chain” Cent one of the first coins ever produced at the U.S. Mint (the honors are shared with the 1793 Half Cent), but the unusual design on the reverse was used for only a short period of time because of public criticism. The Chain, supposed to represent the unity of the original 13 Colonies, instead was perceived to represent slavery, bondage, and a loss of freedom. Today, all “Chain” Cents are rare and most of them appear on low grades, if at all. Sheldon-4 is the rarest of the Sheldon “Chain” varieties.
