Obsolete Currency
Incredible and Perhaps Unique Full Color Specimen Note from The Old Colony Bank of Plymouth

Plymouth, MA, The Old Colony Bank, $2, Superb Gem Color 'Proof' Specimen Note.
Haxby MA-995 G8a SENC/Unlisted with Tint. PRF-R8. This superb note is perhaps the finest obsolete note we have had in a sale or will ever sell. Everything about this note is superb and it stands alone as a single note or would augment even the finest holding of specialized notes. The bank itself is incredibly rare as it converted to a national bank and redeemed its circulation at par. In the late 1830's the bank went all nine yards deigning a series of notes by the New England Bank Note Company using custom vignettes relating to Plymouth and the 'Landing of the Pilgrims.' The vignette used on this note was designed for this series and bank only and shows the colonists being greeted by the Indians on shore. The background has the 'Mayflower' in the distance. This example came from the New England Bank Note Company sample book which was broken up for sale a few years ago. Although the plates were engraved in the late 1830's, this note has the 'ABC' monogram indicating a post 1858 plate and printing by the American Banknote Company. It is printed with a rich red tint plate and not on India paper, but on banknote paper. The impression though is deep like a proof. There were a few red tinted notes of this series for sale, but all are well held and not likely to be for sale soon. This is a great opportunity for an astute collector to obtain an important bank, vignette and type.
