DAVID G. FARRAGUT, American Naval Officer.
Autograph Letter Signed, 'D.G. Farragut / Comdt' as Commandant of the Mare Island Naval Yard, April 20, 1858, 9.75' x 7.75,' Choice Very Fine. To Mr. Paul Langdon, who was his secretary: 'Agreeably to your request you are hereby granted leave of absence for three months from this date.' There are three vertical folds and one horizontal one, which runs just under FarragutÕs signature. Farragut established a navy yard at Mare Island, near San Francisco, in the mid-1850s. He is best known for his Civil War exploits, capturing New Orleans and Mobile Bay for the Union. The grades of vice admiral and admiral were specially created for him by Congress, in gratitude for his accomplishments. A fine example.
