As was the case in the Leyendecker pair earlier (see No. 84), Penfield created these sporty panels that were also used as Collier covers, as well as possibly for an athletically-themed calendar. The artist’s visions of all-American virility include a hammer thrower, an oarsman and a quartet of gents from The National Pastime.
