Outing was devoted to outdoor sports, hunting, fishing and the like, but also contained short stories from the Great Outdoors, with features on nature and conservation. It went through several management and format changes, achieving its largest prestige after 1900 with contributors such as Jack London and Theodore Roosevelt. These five designs–a pair from G. Willard Bonte, one each from Higby, Jean Louise CarrÈ and an anonymous designer–hale from the magazine’s pre-halcyon days, yet bristle with an altogether engaging simple charm and vitality that no doubt contributed to the publication’s future success.
