1847 Hawaiian Cent. Flatly struck on the legends and date as well as King Kamehameha III's nose and coat lapel. Greenish brown iridescence over medium dark brown luster. The government of Hawaii purchased 100,000 one-cent pieces from a mint on the East Coast of the United States. These went into circulation and circulated well, by most accounts. In 1862, when an inventory was taken, there were only 11,000 pieces left in circulation, presumably the others had been melted or lost? This is the King's only coinage issue. The silver pieces of 1883 were struck under the authority of a later King. Kauikeaouli was his name, but he went under the name of King Kamehameha III (choosing to associate himself with the famous founder of the Hawaiian kingdom, as any good politician does). His rule lasted from 1824 until his death in 1854, becoming the longest reigning monarch in Hawaii's history. (#10966)
