Lot 89: Edward Everett Signed Document 1838
Autographs
EDWARD EVERETT, U.S. Statesman, Clergyman, and Orator.
Partly-printed Document Signed, “Edward Everett” as Governor of Massachusetts, 7 pages, August 23, 1838, Boston, 14.5” x 9”, Choice Very Fine. The cover page, which Everett signed at the bottom in brown ink, has the paper and wax state seal intact, with blue ribbons attaching six other pages of various sizes. The document certifies “That the Papers hereunto annexed are true copies... and the Eagle, Leicester and Amherst Banks... are still in legal operation.” Minor fold splits and chips; otherwise, nice eye appeal. Everett was U.S. Representative, Governor of Massachusetts, Minister to Great Britain, President of Harvard, Secretary of State, and U.S. Senator. He is best known for his two-hour oration preceding President Lincoln’s five-minute Gettysburg Address. Here he signs an early banking document.
