1856 Liberty Seated Dollar. Lovely deep antique toned iridescence adorns both sides with a remarkable absence of heavy hairlines. Mirrored fields shine forth powerfully at all angles, and they form a splendid backdrop to more razor-sharp and frosted devices. Nicely cameoed in finish under the toning, and sharply struck over all features including the key area at the top of the eagle's left (facing) wing. Indeed, for the grade, this is a distraction-free example.
It is understood that the original mintage of the Proof 1856 Seated Dollar is somewhere on the order of 60-125 pieces. Of this total, no more than 40 coins are believed extant. The question remains whether or not Proof Silver Dollars of this date were restruck at a later time. Housed in PCGS holder 50189234. (#6999)
