Autograph Letter Signed, 'Jno A Dahlgren,' June 30, 1855, Washington, 9,75' x 7', Choice Very Fine. To George Steers, Naval Constructor, New York Navy Yard: 'I have my orders to see you in New York (just received) and will meet you on Monday morning at the Navy Yard.' Normal folds. Nicely penned and signed. John Adolphus Bernard Dahlgren was on ordnance duty in Washington, D.C. from 1847-63, where he reorganized and equipped the navy ordnance yard. In 1851 he devised a new 11-inch gun which became known as the Dahlgren gun. He was Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance from 1862-63 and 1868-69. In 1863 he became rear admiral in the Union navy and served on sea duty from 1863-65. George Steers was a naval architect and yacht designer who built the steamship 'Adriatic' for the Collins line, the U.S. warship 'Niagara' and the famed racing yacht, 'America,' for which the 'AmericaÕs Cup' is named.
