THE BIG LEBOWSKI (1998) - The Dude's (Jeff Bridges) Screen-matched Cardigan Costume

The Dude's (Jeff Bridges) screen-matched cardigan costume from Joel and Ethan Coen's The Big Lebowski. Unique hand-stitchings on the left breast of this cardigan screen-match to the scene at The Dude's apartment in which Maude Lebowski (Julianne Moore) disrobed, while the Aztec-style patterns below the right pocket of the trousers in this costume screen-match to when The Dude tripped and saw the board he had nailed down in his apartment to thwart Jackie Treehorn's (Ben Gazzara) henchmen earlier in the scene.

Though not a major hit in its original release, The Big Lebowski has since become the epitome of a cult classic with regular repertory screenings and themed events around the globe. Diehard fans of the film known as achievers regularly appear in The Dude's signature cardigan costume, an emblem of the film's one-of-a-kind slacker vibe.

While Bridges also wore his own personal Pendleton Westerley cardigan onscreen, production created matching duplicates, including this one, for filming. This costume consists of a black and beige patterned woollen zip-front cardigan; a purple cotton V-neck shirt; a pair of grey and brown striped cotton trousers; and a wardrobe tag hand-marked "Dude" and scene numbers "49-56; 58-64." The shirt is intentionally distressed by production with holes and small tears to appear well-worn.
