GEORGE CLYMER, Signer of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
Autograph Letter Signed, “Geo Clymer,” no date, no place, 1-1/2 pages, 8” x 5”, Choice Very Fine. In 1791, Clymer was appointed collector of the duty on spirits, which led to the whiskey riots in Pennsylvania. Here he writes to attorney William Rawle, answering some questions which the attorney had posed to him in regard to his duties and service. In part:

“In first setting out on the office I furnished General Hand, Inspector for the third survey with blank commissions for the collectors. I therefore cannot say on what day the first collector for the county of Cumberland, Joseph Bard, was appointed, nor do I know at what time he opened an office of inspector in the county, but General Hand wrote me on the 26 June 1791 that the appointment to that county was made. Mr. Bard afterwards resigned for Cumberland attaining another county Dauphin, he was succeeded by the present officer... which comm. I find bears date the 29 March 1792....”

The integral leaf has been nicely inlaid; otherwise, lightly toned. (Current 5th edition of “Sanders” lists Clymer ALS value at $1,550.) A nice example, well written and boldly signed by Clymer in dark brown ink.
